Junetta Denise Slaughter-Cotton, a cherished member of the community and a beloved educator, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025, in Houston, Texas. Born on January 31, 1955, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, she was the first child of King David and June Slaughter, both of whom have preceded her in death.
Junetta’s formative years were spent in her hometown, where she was an active and vibrant student at Moss Point High School, graduating in 1973. Her passion for education led her to Alcorn State University, where she earned her degree in Special Education and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her commitment to education did not end there; she furthered her studies at Texas Southern University, obtaining a master’s degree in Administration and making her mark as a teacher and administrator for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) until her retirement.
On August 30, 2014, Junetta united in marriage with Ronald McClinton Cotton, creating a partnership that reflected her loving spirit and dedication to family. Together, they celebrated the joy of their son, Jamaal, who bestowed upon them the gift of three beautiful grandchildren: Loudyn, Paris, and Ryder. These grandchildren were the light of her life, providing her with endless joy and motivation.
Junetta will be remembered for her joyful and loyal spirit, as well as her unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and the educational community. Her presence will be profoundly missed by her siblings: her brother Dave Kingston and his wife, Marilyn, along with their children, Dave Jr. and Dana, and her sister Lillie Slaughter Cooper, whose children, Griffin and Lauren, were also dear to her heart. In addition to her family, Junetta's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Sisters, fellow Alcornites, and numerous coworkers will forever honor her legacy.
Visitation services for Junetta will be held at Millennium Memorial Funeral Home in Houston, TX, on October 31, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on November 1, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Brentwood Baptist Church, followed by a celebration of her life from 11:00 AM to 1:45 PM at the same location.
